How to Write a Letter of Intent for a Job Application
The old adage, "A first impression goes a long way," couldn't be truer when you construct your letter of intent. Think of the moment you first meet someone: the eye contact, the handshake and your resulting impression. This is what a prospective employer experiences when they read your letter of intent or cover letter. It is your first chance to make a lasting, positive impression, which could ultimately land you the job.
Instructions
1
Outline the letter into three parts; the introduction, the main body, and the closing. This will prevent you from rambling and also ensure that you cover all the essentials in your letter. Look at sample letters of intent to give you an idea for formatting (see References). Pay attention to the flow of the letter, ensuring that you use a professional voice and that it presents a positive, pleasant tone.
2
Begin your letter with a salutation to the individual who will receive the letter. Formal is best until you've met the person and they've indicated that you can address them otherwise. Also, remember to close with a salutation as well, such as "Regards," "Respectfully," or "Sincerely."
3
Complete the introduction, explaining why you're interested in the job and why you're a good fit, in a few sentences. This is your chance to grab her attention, so try to be creative and dynamic.
4
The main body should elaborate on how your background specifically meets the job requirements. This is also a chance to elaborate on any special skills you bring to the table. Remember to connect your skills with the job requirements. Do not get carried away, however; this is not your resume. The entire letter should fit on one page.
5
Use the closing as your final chance to shine. Show how gracious and courteous you are, and also demonstrate that you intend to get the job. Thank him first for his time, and then indicate when you'll be contacting him to follow up on your application. Be sure to use a pleasant, polite voice.
6
Proofread the letter thoroughly and use spellcheck on your computer, if possible. You do not want a missed typo to ruin your chances at landing a great job.
