The Cover Letter
Cover letters represent the beginning of the recruitment process and, because they appear to be straightforward and simple, they are often written quickly and badly.
Cover letters serves two important functions: to introduce you and sell you to a prospective employer. If you wish to make immediate impact with this person you should put some thought and care into what you will say to him for the first time.
The first thing to recognize is that recruiters are pressed for time so keep the letter to one page. A short letter gives the impression of a focused candidate who, like the recruiter, is busy with work and career. The old adage 'If you want something done, ask a busy person' comes across from a short cover letter.
The letter should be started off with a statement of intent. It should tell the recruiter what you want in one sentence i.e. 'if you are looking for a Technical Director who has established an excellent reputation for successful project implementation, the enclosed resume should be of interest to you'. If you are applying for an advertised job clearly state the job title in the first sentence of the letter.
Once you have created a good job objective, you can then explain in more detail why it is that you want to work in this job, this company and this city in China. You must show the recruiter that you are enthusiastic about making the decision to work with his company and that there is no hesitation in your mind.
Now that the recruiter knows that you genuinely want to work with his company, he will ask himself why he should hire you and not the many other candidates that have applied with the same background and experience.
This is achieved by writing a first statement that clearly shows what it is that you can do for the company. If the letter is in reply to a job advertisement you should match your capabilities from your Resume to the job specification.
Show the recruiter that you are the right person for the job and that you, the right candidate, will call him or follow up in some other way in the next few days. This creates momentum in the recruitment process and generally gets you a conversation with the recruiter that you might not otherwise have gotten.
